Clarke hails his old friends

Allan Clarke will welcome the Leeds United supporters, who make the journey to Lincoln today for the final round of pre-season warm-up matches. Now managing his fourth club, after two spells in charge at Barnsley, and one apiece at Leeds and Scunthorpe, Clarke is looking forward to the prospect of pitting his Fourth Division side against Howard Wilkinson's £6 million First Division newcomers. "The Leeds supporters were always very good to me in my nine years as a player and eighteen months as a manager. They are worth a goal start wherever Leeds play." said Clarke, preparing for his first season in charge at Lincoln. Today's match in the Yorkshire and Humberside Cup may only be a warm-up for the League action, which starts next weekend but Clarke has prepared carefully. Martin Wilkinson, who was his assistant during his time as Elland Road manager, has watched Leeds' last two matches and reported back to Clarke. "Martin will be doing my assessing of opponents this season and I think I know what to expect, although Howard Wilkinson has such a large squad hemight play a completely different team." he said. Clarke, who was sacked by Barnsley last December, is glad to be back in management and sees similarities with the Lincoln set-up and the Barnsley side which was in the Fourth Division when he became player-manager in 1979. "Lincoln are a similar sized club to Barnsley, and, if I do as well here as I did at Oakwell, then I will be very happy."he said. "The arrival of Leeds has generated quite a lot of excitement in the town and it will be a big occasion for my young team, several of whom have come from non-League football. I am told that Lincoln used to play the long ball game a lot last season but anyone who has seen my teams play before knows that is not my way. We will be endeavouring to play the game properly, the way I was taught to play at Leeds United."
